Near-Time allows you to receive updates to your spaces via RSS feeds, Atom and Podcasts.  This way you can be alerted to new content without having to visit the site directly.

Getting Updates via RSS and Atom

Within a space:  RSS and Atom feeds are available for each of the following sections of a space - news (blog), pages (wiki), files, forums, tasks, saved searches.

To subscribe to a feed in a particular section of a space:

  1. Click on the RSS or Atom icon at the top of the right sidebar.
(Tip: hover your mouse over the link to view which section the feed represents (ex. "Subscribe to the Atom or RSS feed for pages in this space" - clicking the link will subscribe you to the pages (wiki) feed.)
  2. Once you download the feed, upload it to your reader or bookmark it in your reader's feed folder on your browser.

Across all your spaces:  There is also an RSS or Atom feed of "What's New" on your dashboard (a feed for activity across all your spaces), and is available at the bottom of the "What's New" section.

To subscribe to a feed of activity across all your spaces:

  1. Click on "What's New in Your Spaces" in the upper left corner of the browser window
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the content in the left column (What's New)
  3. Click on the RSS or Atom icon
  4. Once you download the feed, upload it to your reader or bookmark it in your reader's feed folder on your browser.

Note: To view RSS & Atom feeds with Near-Time you will need to have downloaded a reader.  Some popular readers for articles include: Feed Demon, FeedReader, My Yahoo!, NewsGator and NewzCrawler.

Using Podcasts

Podcasts allow you to subscribe and automatically download the audio files that have been uploaded to a space.

  1. Once an audio file has been uploaded as an attachment within a space, you can click on the Subscribe to Podcast button on the bottom right hand side of the page.

  2. You will then be propted to open up the file in an application that supports podcasts like Apple's free iTunes.  Another free podcast program, iPodder, works with a variety of portable players. Odeo is a Web-based podcast player.

Once you have subscribed to the podcast, any uploaded music file will be automatically dowloaded into your application trouble free.

The best way to get automatic updates of all spaces that you belong to is to
    1. go to "what's new in your space"  at the upper left corner,
    2. when you are at that page, click the feed URL(RSS/Atom etc)  at bottom of the main page .  Take the URL address then configure it in your email client feed reader or create a new bookmark in your browser .  Here is a reference on how to configure Thunderbird email client for your RSS feed: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_RSS_Basics
